One day I opened my bag of tricks, and drew a pre-raphaelites-esqe lady with every color of colored pencil that I own. Just to see what would happen.
I kindof like it... I'd probably like it more if I would use reference for once. Eh *shrug*
The plant name 'belladonna' literally means "beautiful woman", and it is suggested that it may have derived its name from one of it's cosmetic uses. Women used to use belladonna eyedrops to dilate their pupils and make their eyes look larger and more luminous. Considering that they were using powdered white lead as facial powder, I have to say the belladonna was probably the lesser of two evils.
I still want to do a picture of someone with hair so HUGE that all you can see are bits and pieces of her sticking out in places. lol. People are going to start thinking I have some sort of hair fetish.
pretty much, the scan doesn't really do all the layering of color justice. I think I started with orange and then kept layering color on... I'm looking at the original right now, looks like lots of shades of green and orange and brown, and then some blues, purples, and several yellows. thanks for the favie love!!!
AH! I remember watching the history channel (best channel ever) and learning about those silly toilet habits of the past.... I remember them mentioning lead-based powder, those special eye-enhancers, and the "pearl-like" look women desired for their foreheads; but I also remember them including somewhere the fact that they used mercury for something...*racking brain* I remember laughing when hearing it...
Anyway, I LOVE this picture...but of course the pre-raphaelite movement is one of my favorites (in fact, I have a pre-raphaelites calander staring at me right now ) Reference picture, smeference picture, you did great doing this from your memory. *sigh* The women in this art style look more real to me than who we currently see walking down the street.
Pfft, references. The hair and drapery are spot-on, as ever. Even her slightly jaundiced complexion somehow doesn't make her any less beautiful. White lead, you say? Maybe that explains it

Dmitri, you know how we've always talked about the possibility of something going wrong with the Bomb Well now, what happened is ah one of our base commanders well, he went a little funny in the head and, ah he went and did a silly thing
Srsly, there is so much trash on TV that I cling to any and all things marginally educational which remain. I know the romans used mercury for some sort of cosmetics (probably through using cinnabar but I'm not as certain of this), and of course they used it in the hat making process ("Mad as a hatter" - people went wonky cause of exposure to mercury).
I like her more and more as I continue to look at her. I finished her months ago but was apathetic, but she's really growing on me, and now I want to do more in this style. It's different for me, and right now different is appealing. And I hate how fake everyone looks these days. What is with the over-dyed hair, and the tanned-til-leatherlike skin, the abnormally white teeth, and all the caked on makeup that makes people look fake? And don't even get me started on cosmetic surgery. They give everyone the same ugly little button nose! ughhhh *is disgusted*
Oh, yeah the tanned skin...
Well, they'll regret it when they're 50, and their faces resemble an alligator's hide. Ah! Must stop now! I could go on forever talking about my problems with today’s fashion sense.
…big heavily-glossed sticky lips, sickly-willowy-boyishly-thin figures…
*siiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiigh*
