Gossamer Yellow by janey-jane Gossamer Yellow by janey-jane
Unfortunately this is my last illustration for Dark Valentine magazine, as it ended production with this month's issue. Fortunately I was lucky to have a wonderfully dark and atmospheric little ghost story by K.C. Ball to illustrate .

Thanks and compliments to the cadre of editors, designers, writers and artists who made the magazine possible - it was lovely to be part of it all.

Archived copies of all DV issues can be found here: [link]

I see you, portrait of Georgian Lady in the top-right that sits elsewhere in your gallery!

Just an awesome piece all around- I love how many little details you snuck into it!

NO JUDGEMENT. It works perfectly in this picture and after all, why not use it more than once? It's like your favorite dress- display it all the time, anywhere, for every occasion!

Dun dun dun!

I didn't notice the blood at seeing the thumb nailed sized version. Totally gives me the shivers!

I love how the first thing I notice is how her hair looks different in the background and not how her skirt seems to be oozing blood. ^^;

Great Picture!

that is amazing! :D at first i thought it was a reflection in the background, but it's facing the same way so maybe it's a gost of her?...oooh :O i ADORE all the detailing in the wood boards and the carpet, but mostly the painting on the wall - it's one of your other pictures!

This is really spectacular. The image in the doorway, that's like a copy of her but not, and the way the trailing dress turns into blood, are so atmospheric an spooky while still beautiful: exactly the sort of thing I've come to expect from you. :)

I love the little differences between the creepy reflection and the woman. It's almost like it's a spirit from the past that's taken control of her. XP

I agree. There is something to be said when an artist could make something associated with sun cheeriness and food and make it haunting and almost terrifying. Great job!

Oh wow, this is really hauntingly beautiful. The soft, muted color scheme is perfect, it helps the bright red blood stand out nicely. The creepy reflection in the mirror was a nice touch too.:D

Ohhh, dark and lovely. The blood stands out so starkly, and yet it's like a train of her dress. I'm sorry the magazine ended so early! That's too bad, as many of those stories were really good.

The background here, by the way, is uh-may-zing. :D

heh, thanks! I was talking to my bff the other day and she was commenting on the background as well, if nothing else I'm thankful that I got the chance to illustrate for DV because it forced me to do backgrounds. It was almost like a mini art class - where they make you work outside your comfort zone.

Wow, this is so creepy and beautiful at the same time. I love the texture and the effect of the dress turning into blood dripping down the stairs. Also the doppleganger behind the lady is very unsettling.

This reminds me of Lizzie Bordon. I mean that as a compliment, we New Englanders are very fond of her story. (Personally I feel she was framed).
Ethereal and lovely with a hint of danger, I love it!

fffffffffft... that's awesome! The story, now that I think of it, does have a bit of a Lizzie Bordon-esqe quality to it. Women who may or may not be guilty nevertheless get trapped in the house where ghastly events have occurred... mmm.

Salem Mass. has created a museum dedicated to her.
Did you know they actually displayed her parent's skulls in the courtroom right in front of her? Poor thing fainted instantly when they were unveiled.
To this day, there is no solid proof ether damning or clearing her. Discovery Channel has solved King Tut's murder but no one's bothered to clear poor Lizzie.

its (sort of) Edwardian, like early 1900s. but I wanted the dress to also look a little like something someone more modern would wear, since the dress reappears in the story, so I took a few liberties with the design. But overall its more or less Edwardian.

Ah huh. I've been looking for 1910-style costumes as reference material for a story I'm writing, but I've been having trouble - everything I find seems to be either Victorian (too early) or WWI (too late).

I was just curious. It's certainly a dress I would wear :)

Oh, wicked....has that creepy Agatha Christi feel to it. And I totally agree with the first "rabid canary" comment.
The textures are REALLY nice in this also...I am really admiring how rich your backgrounds are getting. I seriously need to learn from you and work on that.

Also, I'm calling you out - did you borrow one of your other pieces from DA to be the painting in the background? Haha! It looks SURPRISINGLY familiar...althought maybe not, the face seems a bit off....hmmm...:)
