This is the image I worked up for the invitation to my parent's annual Solstice Party (it's usually held on the 21st or 22nd so they call it a solstice party instead of a Christmas party). It's based on a sketch I did on a train to Scotland a couple of summers ago.
Cheap colored pencil and pen in my sketchbook, cleaned up and enhanced in photoshop.
I love her wings, and that crescent halo. Far more stylish than your average Christmas card fare, that's for sure. Sorry, Solstice card fare
Gawd I hate Christmas. I'd love to see a bit of pagan frolicking in the woods brought back to the season.

Dmitri, you know how we've always talked about the possibility of something going wrong with the Bomb Well now, what happened is ah one of our base commanders well, he went a little funny in the head and, ah he went and did a silly thing
Yeah, my family has never been religious but we carry on with all the pagan trappings that have somehow gotten associated with the holiday (I don't think there are too many fir trees in Bethlehem, srsly). It's funny how often I've had people exclaim when they find out I'm not religious because we do HUGE Christmases at my house. We usually have 60-70 people come to the solstice party and my mom and I cook for like two weeks beforehand. We have one room with a really high ceiling so we get the biggest tree we can find, and we have all of these really random ornaments that have nothing to do with christmas really... greenery everywhere, big fire etc. We go all out but people don't really think about the fact that the stuff we go all out on doesn't have anything to do with what christmas is really celebrating. yay pagan frolicking!
Do people do trees in Australia? I remember talking with a friend from Adelaide about how here we get scarves and mittens and there's fake snow everywhere and stuff and he said he always got beachy-type stuff, but we never got talking about other Christmas traditions. Now that I think of it, I should probably be getting warm weather stuff because I live in Texas and even in the dead of winter it doesn't get that cold. hmmm.
I was really pleased with the wings, they came out just how I wanted them to - I wanted them to be stylized and stiff like the rest of her, and I feel like it worked.
Yeah, we do trees... an optimistic neighbour even spread fake snow on her lawn a few years back, but even that melted after a 45-degree day (trying to remember the formula for conversion to farenheit... nah, sorry, it's gone). Aussie Christmas is usually a beach-and-barbecue sort of affair, from what I've seen. I get a bit bah humbug about the whole thing myself, coming from a Jewish family (and just being naturally grouchy, I suppose). Your celebrations sound pretty incredible, though! Probably rather more authentic, too.

haha... I should know the conversion since I spent two of my recent summers in Britain, but instead I just developed a feeling for it, when they forecast 35 degrees i read it as "This is what the British think is hot, but it's like a nice spring day for a Texan."
